Metal Music, or “heavy metal” is a relatively new genre of rock that began in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Its roots reside in blues rock, psychedelic rock, and early distorted rock.
Extended guitar solos, thick distortion, and general loudness are the most notable characteristics of this genre. Because it’s such an intense genre, it attracted a lot of attention in its prime, both good and bad. It also provoked a subcultural movement that bred its own easily-recognizable fans. A sense of fashion was born through metal music and with that came a sense of rebellion.
Many genres have been born from their umbrella “metal music,” that mostly became popular in the late 1970’s early 80’s. Hair metal, which was mostly based around the fashion, arose, mathcore, which arose from its obscure time signatures, and death metal, which is aggressive, fast, and brutal.
